SMART 2.0 (Social Mobile Approaches to Reducing weighT) is a UCSD-based research study aimed at reducing weight of young adults in the university setting using technologies (Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria scale), social media, text messaging, and health coaching.

About

SMART 2.0 is a 2-year long intervention for young adults (ages 18 – 35 years), in the university setting, who are overweight and interested in losing weight. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups that involve the following activities:

  • Group 1 – Receives a Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria 2 scale with access to the Fitbit smartphone application and daily text messages related to physical activity, diet, sleep, mental health, and weight loss. This group also will have access to SMART 2.0 social media pages, assigned to an online group on Facebook messenger with 6-12 other participants, and individual health coaching sessions.
  • Group 2 – Receives a Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria scale with access to the Fitbit smartphone application and daily text messages related to physical activity, diet, sleep, mental health, and weight loss. This group also will have access to SMART 2.0 social media pages and will be assigned to an online group on Facebook messenger with 6-12 other participants.
  • Group 3 – Receives a Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria 2 scale with access to the Fitbit smartphone application.

In addition to receiving a Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria 2 scale, all participants will receive individualized Precision Physical Assessments every 6 months after each measurement visit. These assessments include:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Lean weight and body fat percentage (body composition)
  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD)
  • Waist and hip circumference
  • Blood pressure and heart rate
  • Cardio-respiratory fitness level
  • Grip strength

Each participant is also be compensated up to $100 over the 2-year study.
